Packing Up and Letting Go.

I responded viscerally to this post! Too well I remember planning, worrying, checking, scheduling and working overtime in order to be away from home and the kids for a day or two. My stomach hurts just thinking about it.
Likewise, I tingle when I remember a getaway with my best friend, Linda, that gave me a window into a former “self” that I had long abandoned. We played, sang, walked, slept (okay, I slept, she worked out), and ate our way through the precious three days, sharing confidences, doubts, and hopes.
Now, as the single parent of an 18 year old preparing to go to college, I can see and reflect on both of these aspects of myself – the part that wants to be in control, to accomodate and to be afraid, and the part that wants to lose control, share decisions and be fearless. I am content to live in the tension of both worlds, knowing my life is richer for it.
This contentment is grounded in my friendship with Linda, who invites me into myself every time we are together.
